Whilst at Spoons on Suicide Sunday, Esther devised MASHEEN. MASHEEN was an unstoppable force capable of destroying words and drinks. Upon seeing the categories for Peterborough, MASHEEN decided to give rowing together a go and, despite a considerable height difference, the result was fairly fast.
Unfortunately, MASHEEN did not have a start come Saturday afternoon and so a second outing was had, deemed by some as cheating. Come Sunday morning, Martyn decided that he did not like lane 3 and was determined to race in lane 2. This was a controversial decision but paid off. Whilst Martyn was giving up on steering, Steen decided not to sprint for the line. These facts led to coming second by 1.1s.
Second place in the heat was not the end of MASHEEN for a repechage was held. There were supposed to be 2 opponents although one of these took one look at MASHEEN and scratched. Anton was unphased by MASHEEN and turned up to be their sole opponent. This race was to determine MASHEEN's rowing destiny as Anton could not be allowed to finish higher in the competition. On the start, Anton requested a Masters' head start but was politely refused. The start went well, MASHEEN stayed about a canvas ahead with frequent calls for strokeside pressure and upcoming buoys. Anton's double then made an interesting choice and tried to play the same game, changing into the marshalling lane. This did not have the desired effect, leading to a victory for MASHEEN (who *technically* stayed in lane this time).
MASHEEN now had to contend with the big shots in the final. Going down off the start, and with the water once again looking bluer in the neighbouring lane, a lane change was executed. This time it did not pay off. MASHEEN's Peterborough campaign ended in 4th place.
Undeterred by the competition in the final, MASHEEN vowed to train, even if it constitutes cheating, and return stronger and faster next year...
